Flickerfest Announces Competitive Programme

Flickerfest boasts Australia's only Academy Accredited international short film festival, as well as national and documentary competitions. This year Flickerfest received a record 980 entries from all around the world. The successful filmmakers included in the 5 International and 4 Australian shorts competitions will vie for a host of cash and other prestigious industry prizes, including the Jameson Short Film Award valued at 6,000 euros, to be awarded for the first time ever in Australia at Flickerfest 2005.

Some of the films eligible to win this prestigious award that will screen as part of the Australian Programme include 'Everything Goes' a film about two people looking for things to furnish their future when they meet a man selling the bric-a-brac of his broken marriage, starring our home grown stars, Abbie Cornish and Hugo Weaving while Sam Worthington takes on the role of a young farmer on his way to Canberra to see the new Jackson Pollock painting in 'Blue Poles'.

Screening in the International Programme, amongst a host of multi-awarded shorts from all around the world are, Flatlife (Belgian/Winner of the Grand Prix du Jury in Cannes 2004) a film about hanging a painting on the wall, building a house of cards, doing the laundry and watching TV: utmost innocent and harmless actions on the daily lives of four ordinary people living next door to each other, Las Viandas (Spain) a film about a restaurant in the mountains where a new guest comes in and the chef makes him enjoys his best dishes and Shortage of Space (Norway) where a man ends up in a hospital corridor after he is moved around because he is in the way.

The film festival offers an opportunity for up and coming directors to showcase their talents. In 2005 Flickerfest will screen 'The Scree' a short film directed by well known comedian and actor Paul McDermott, 'Fuel' by budding actor and director Nash Edgerton and 'Birthday Boy' a short animated film by Sejong Park, which has been short listed for an Oscar nomination.

The judging panel consists of award winning independent filmmaker Curtis Levy (The President Versus David Hicks - Australian Film Institute Award for Best Documentary Film), Producer/Director Anna Broinowski, host of SBS 'The Movie Show' Jaimie Leonarder, Acquisitions Editor for the late night alternative arts series ZeD on the Canada Broadcasting Corporation, Sue Biely, award winning Producer Louise Smith (Tulip, Co-Producer The Rage in Placid Lake), director of numerous short films Catriona McKenzie (Box, The Third Note, Road, Redfern Beach) and Australia director Kriv Stenders whose first feature film 'Illustrated Family Doctor' is set to be released in March.
