Flickerfest to present prestigious Jameson Short Film Award
November 18, 2004
November 18, 2004- Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, now celebrating its 14th year, has been chosen to host the Jameson Short Film Award, a partnership between the European Coordination of Film Festivals and Jameson Irish Whiskey.
Flickerfest is honoured to be the first film festival in Australia to receive such a distinguished accolade that reflects the continued growth of Flickerfest and its reputation as one of the top short film festivals across the globe.
Marie-José Carta, European Coordination of Film Festivals acknowledged the international significance of Flickerfest,
"This would be a great opportunity for us to be present in one of the most important festivals in Australia", she said.
The award, valued at 6,000 euros, is recognised as one of the most valuable prizes for a short film internationally and will be the largest ever given to a short film within an Australian film festival.
Peter O' Connell, International Sales and Marketing Director, Jameson Irish Whiskey, is delighted to announce the creation of the Jameson Short Film Award at Flickerfest.
"It is important for us to share with the Australian market all the benefits of our global association with cinema and importantly to share a rewarding and memorable brand experience with our consumers," he said.
Jameson Irish Whisky and the European Coordination of Film Festivals began their association in 1999. The Jameson Short Film Award was founded in 2001 representing only 8 European countries. In 2005 the Award will be presented at 15 festivals across Europe and 5 festivals outside of Europe including Australia.
The Jameson Short Film Award acknowledges the outstanding achievements of filmmakers and offers a unique opportunity to enhance the profile of the winning directors and their films on an international scale.
The award is given to the directors whose short film has the potential to reach an international audience and represents the very best in creative contemporary cinema.
In addition to the cash award the short film will receive further exposure on a major European tour as the winners of the Award are screened at the festivals where the Jameson Short Film Award will be hosted the following year.
Festival Director Bronwyn Kidd described the news as a huge honour.
"Not only does this cement Flickerfest and Australia on the highly regarded international circuit, it provides an exceptional opportunity for our short filmmakers and will encourage even greater participation in Flickerfest," she said.
Audiences and filmmakers alike will substantially benefit from this level of exposure for Australian shorts.
Flickerfest will be officially named in the list of European and International festivals representing the Jameson Short Film Award at the Havana Film Festival, Cuba in early December.
Flickerfest is on from January 7-16 and will be followed by an extensive 15 venue national tour to major cities and key regional areas.
