Flickerfest set to sizzle with extended summer programme

October 17, 2004

October 17, 2004: Australia's premier international short film festival, Flickerfest today announced an extended programme to run over ten days, covering two weekends from January 7 to 16, 2005 at Sydney's Bondi Beach.

Flickerfest has fast become Sydney's favourite short film extravaganza through its dedication to showcasing the very best of independent shorts from Australia and around the world.

Flickerfest boasts Australia's only Academy Accredited international short film festival, as well as national and documentary competitions. The successful filmmakers will share a host of cash and other prestigious industry prizes, including The Jameson Short Film Award valued at 6,000 euros, which Flickerfest has recently been chosen to present by the European Coordination of Film Festivals and Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Festival Director Bronwyn Kidd also announced the 2005 special sessions, featuring a cultural spotlight on Mexico, a Horror/Thriller programme, a selection of Music clip shorts from legendary UK Electronic label Warp Records and a programme dedicated to showcasing the very best of animation shorts from Annecy, an international film festival dedicated entirely to animation. (Spotlight programme details attached).

"This line up of special programmes is the most exciting and daring yet. It promises to seduce you one minute with Salma Hayek in 'Sweet Releases' featuring in the Mexican programme and the next send shivers down your spine with our ghoulish Horror fest. The innovative Warp Music clip programme is a 'must see', featuring clips exclusively screening at Flickerfest 2005."

As a feature of the extended festival, Bronwyn has also programmed a special Flickerfest retrospective, showcasing award winners from the past 9 years.

Flickerfest's star-studded opening and closing nights always attract well-known Australian filmmakers, key industry figures and celebrities who turn out to support what has become the hot event on Sydney's summer calendar.

Flickerfest is pleased to announce three new patrons, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann and Claudia Karvan. With the support and encouragement of Australia's leading talent Flickerfest continues to develop and grow, securing its place as one of the world's top ranking short film festivals.

Short on length but never on entertainment value, audiences can look forward to viewing the world's most imaginative and inspirational shorts under the Bondi summer sky before the festival heads off around Australia to 15 venues nationally, including Byron Bay, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
